Preparing your tour
Before embarking on this adventure, it’s essential to get organized. An itinerant hike in the Jura, especially one lasting several days, cannot be improvised. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your trek and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Putting safety first
Safety is paramount. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you set off, and take along an IGN map and compass to avoid getting lost. You can obtain your map from one of the Pays de Gex – Monts Jura Tourist Office information offices. Respect the regulations in force, particularly in the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, and remain vigilant along your route.
Plan accommodation and meals
For an itinerant hike lasting several days, plan where you’ll spend the night and how you’ll eat. You have the choice between bivouacking (beware of nature reserve regulations) or reserving a mountain refuge. When it comes to food, opt for simple, light-to-prepare meals, such as dried products, seeds or pancakes. Don’t forget your stove, and opt for food that’s easy to transport.
The right equipment
Good equipment is the key to a successful itinerant tour. Pack a suitable rucksack (around 10 kilos) and don’t forget the essentials:
- Technical clothing for cold weather;
- Sleeping bag or sleeping pad;
- Sunglasses;
- Food and water;
- Headlamp;
- Walking sticks;
- Complete first-aid kit.
Water management
Water is essential. Find out about water supplies along your route, and take along water purification tablets in case you don’t have access to drinking water.
Now you’re ready for adventure and to explore the Jura Mountains. Whether it’s the landscapes, the encounters or the beauty of the surroundings, every moment is an invitation to discover.
Take a step back and let yourself be amazed!
