1931, in southern French Indochina, a woman lives alone with her two children, Joseph and Suzanne (aged 20 and 16), on the Cambodian coast near the port of Ram. All they own is an old Citroën B12.
The mother saved her money and worked in a cinema as a pianist for 15 years to buy her concession, which turns out to be uncultivable: drowned every year by the sea, which the mother insists on calling the Pacific Ocean. She fights against the elements and convinces the administration and the peasants around her to build dams against the sea. The corrupt administration, against which she never ceases to fight with the same perseverance as against nature, gets the better of her, and she slowly sinks into madness.
The children carry and support her. The violence of their relationship is matched only by their tenderness.
