Do you want to get away from it all and get a breath of fresh air? Then I have the perfect place for you, the Pertes de la Valserine! A hidden natural treasure, at the gates of the city that proudly bears the name of its river, Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.
Meet at the parking lot located in the rue Louis Dumont, just below the railway viaduct. Don’t forget to bring a picnic lunch, it would be a shame to miss an opportunity to eat in such a beautiful place! So, are you ready? Yes ? Then let’s go!

In just a few meters, find yourself immersed in a unique landscape, go down to the banks and enjoy a beautiful forest and relaxing landscapes.
Throughout your exploration, discover magnificent waterfalls, a forest covered with moss, even on the trees!
Walk on a large footbridge literally over the banks of the Valserine, and if you look carefully, you will be able to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.
The Valserine is the first French river to have received the label “Rivière Sauvage” for the quality of its water and its ecosystem
The power of water
A path will take you straight to the many gorges carved by the passage of the river and its many water-filled pools. You might be lucky enough to see a frog or two splashing around in their little pond, who knows!
These crevasses can be more than 30m deep, impressive no? Would you dare to look down when you cross the different bridges? Me, without any doubt!
During your walk you can observe the site of Métral and its old dam. It was a place of heavy industrial activity in the past. Take a break at the edge of the river to take a dip if the weather is good! The water is calm and cool, perfect for resting after all that walking!
Did you know that Bellegarde was one of the first cities in France to be electrified?
Still up for another walk? Then I encourage you to do the Voie du Tram, a small path with a slight slope that you can access from a junction with the Pertes de la Valserine.
